Shri Vighneshwar Temple, Ozar – The Remover of Obstacles
Located in the village of Ozar near Junnar in Maharashtra, the Vighneshwar Temple, Ozar is one of the most beautiful and historically significant shrines of the Ashtavinayak Yatra.
Situated close to the peaceful banks of the Kukadi River, the temple is known for its impressive stone walls, elegant architecture, and shining golden spire. The presiding deity here, Ganesha, is worshipped as Vighneshwar, the lord who removes obstacles from the lives of devotees.
The Legend of Vighnasura
According to traditional temple lore, a powerful king named Abhinandan once performed a great sacrificial ritual (Yagna) with the ambition of gaining supremacy over heaven. This worried Indra, the king of the gods.
To disrupt the ritual, Indra created a powerful demon named Vighnasura, whose name literally means “the creator of obstacles.”
Vighnasura soon began disturbing not only the king’s ritual but also religious ceremonies across the world. Sacred rituals, marriages, and prayers were interrupted, creating chaos among sages and devotees.
Unable to control the growing disturbances, the gods and sages prayed to Ganesha, the divine remover of obstacles.
Ganesha confronted Vighnasura and defeated him in battle. Realizing he could not overcome the divine power of the Lord, the demon surrendered and sought forgiveness.
The Mercy of Ganesha
Moved by the demon’s surrender, Ganesha chose to spare his life but placed an important condition.
Vighnasura would only have power in places where Ganesha was not worshipped.
The demon then made a final request—that his name should remain associated with the Lord so that people would remember how even the greatest obstacles ultimately surrender to divine wisdom.
Ganesha granted the request and took the name Vighneshwar, meaning “Lord who controls obstacles.”
The temple at Ozar is believed to commemorate this victory of divine order over disruption.
Temple Architecture and Maratha History
The temple at Ozar is widely admired for its elegant design and strong construction.
The Deepstambhas
At the entrance stand two tall Deepstambhas (lamp towers). During major festivals such as Ganesh Chaturthi, these towers are illuminated with rows of oil lamps, creating a magnificent sight.
The Golden Spire
One of the most striking features of the temple is its golden kalas (spire), which shines brightly in the sunlight and can be seen from a distance.
Maratha Patronage
The temple received significant support during the Maratha period. Tradition holds that Chimaji Appa, the brother of Baji Rao I, contributed to the temple’s renovation after his victory over the Portuguese in the Battle of Vasai in 1739.
Fortified Walls
Unlike many temples, the Vighneshwar temple complex is surrounded by strong stone fortification walls, giving it the appearance of a small fortress. These walls were likely built to protect the shrine during the politically unstable periods of the 18th century.
The Idol of Vighneshwar
The idol of Ganesha in the temple is traditionally believed to be Swayambhu, meaning self-manifested.
The idol faces east, an auspicious direction in Hindu temple architecture.
It is coated with Shendur (vermilion), which is common in the worship of Ganesha in Maharashtra.
According to temple tradition, the idol is adorned with precious ornaments and stones during special occasions and festivals.
At the entrance of the sanctum, visitors can also see stone statues of Dwarpalas (guardian figures) symbolically protecting the shrine.
Spiritual Importance for Pilgrims
Among the eight sacred temples of the Ashtavinayak Yatra, the shrine at Ozar is especially associated with the removal of obstacles.
Devotees often visit this temple when facing difficulties such as:
delays in marriage
obstacles in business or career
legal or personal challenges
Praying to Vighneshwar is believed to help clear the path forward and bring stability and success in life.
The temple’s calm surroundings near the Kukadi River and its spacious courtyard also offer pilgrims a peaceful place for reflection before continuing their spiritual journey.
