Shri Siddhivinayak Temple, Siddhatek – The Seat of Divine Success
While the Ashtavinayak Yatra traditionally begins at Mayureshwar Ganpati Temple, the second sacred destination is Siddhatek. This temple stands on a small hill on the northern bank of the Bhima River in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra.
Siddhatek is considered one of the most spiritually powerful sites of the Ashtavinayak pilgrimage. The presiding deity here is worshipped as Siddhivinayak, the giver of accomplishment, divine power, and spiritual success.
The Legend of Vishnu and the Demons Madhu and Kaitabha
The origin of Siddhatek is connected with a story described in the Mudgala Purana.
At the beginning of creation, Brahma emerged from the lotus that grew from the navel of Vishnu. As Brahma began creating the universe, two powerful demons—Madhu and Kaitabha—arose from the dirt or wax of Vishnu’s ear.
The demons disrupted the process of creation and threatened the balance of the universe. Vishnu woke from his cosmic sleep and began battling them. However, despite his immense strength, he was unable to defeat the demons.
Seeking guidance, Vishnu approached Shiva. Shiva explained that Vishnu had forgotten to invoke Ganesha before beginning the battle.
Realizing his mistake, Vishnu came to the hill at Siddhatek and performed intense penance while chanting the mantra “Om Shri Ganeshaya Namah.” Pleased with this devotion, Ganesha granted Vishnu divine powers—known as Siddhi.
With these blessings, Vishnu returned to the battlefield and finally defeated Madhu and Kaitabha. Because Vishnu attained divine success (Siddhi) at this place, the site came to be known as Siddhatek.
The Unique Right-Trunked Idol
One of the most distinctive features of Siddhatek is the form of the idol.
The idol of Ganesha here has its trunk turned to the right side, which is extremely rare in temple iconography. Most Ganesha idols have the trunk turned to the left.
In Hindu symbolism, a right-trunked Ganesha represents the Siddhivinayak form, associated with powerful solar energy and strict ritual discipline. Because of this, the deity is considered very powerful and highly “jagrut,” meaning spiritually awakened. Devotees believe that such a form grants success quickly but expects sincere devotion and careful observance of rituals.
Among the eight Ashtavinayak temples, Siddhatek is the only shrine where the idol’s trunk turns to the right.
Architecture and Historical Contributions
The temple seen today reflects centuries of devotion and reconstruction.
The stone sanctum (Garbhagriha) is believed to have been rebuilt in the 18th century under the patronage of Ahilyabai Holkar, a queen famous for restoring many important Hindu pilgrimage sites across India.
The temple complex includes a sabhamandap (assembly hall), a nagarkhana (drum chamber), and a north-facing sanctum containing the self-manifested idol of Siddhivinayak.
The Sacred Hill and the Pradakshina Tradition
Unlike many other temples, the entire hill at Siddhatek is considered sacred.
Devotees perform a Pradakshina (circumambulation) around the hill rather than just the temple. The traditional route is about 5 kilometers long and circles the entire hill.
Many pilgrims complete this pradakshina barefoot as an act of devotion and faith. It is believed that performing this sacred walk with sincerity helps devotees overcome obstacles and attain success in their endeavors.
Spiritual Importance for Pilgrims
For devotees undertaking the Ashtavinayak Yatra, Siddhatek represents the place where divine success is attained.
Pilgrims believe that prayers offered to Siddhivinayak help remove difficult obstacles and grant success in important undertakings. The temple’s location on the peaceful banks of the Bhima River further adds to its spiritual atmosphere, and many devotees offer prayers by the river before proceeding for darshan.
For centuries, Siddhatek has been regarded as a powerful “Siddha-kshetra,” a place where devotion to Lord Ganesha is believed to bring accomplishment, wisdom, and spiritual progress.
